How Working the Muscles May Boost Brainpower

Lab animals and people have proved to show better cognitive thinking after several weeks of exercising. Researchers found an increase in neuron in portions of the brain in runners. To better understand the connection between muscle and brain, Dr. van Praag and her team used two different drugs to increase muscle performance in lab mice. Both sets of mice showed increased cognitive performance and more neurons in their brains. Dr. van Praag speculates enzymes released from muscles enters the bloodstream and travels to the brain creating the increased performance.
