Concussions May Be More Severe in Girls and Young Athletes

The American Journal of Sports Medicine produced new research showing that younger athletes and female athletes suffer from more symptoms for a longer duration after a concussion. Dr. Covassin and her colleagues followed 300 high school athletes for two years. The young athletes were given a baseline test and a post-concussion test. From the tests, the researchers concluded that female athletes showed more decline in visual memory than male athletes. Also, cognitive impairment persisted in younger athletes longer than recorded for college athletes.
