Gene-Modified Stem Cell Transplant Protects Patients from Toxic Side Effects of Chemotherapy


Using a brain cancer patients’ own gene-modified blood stem cells, scientists were able to protect their bone marrow against the toxic effects of chemotherapy.  A study with three subjects who had glioblastoma (brain tumor) should that two of the ill patients had survived longer then predicted.  The third patient was able to remain alive and the disease went away.
