A Weight Loss Surgery Sends Some to Canada

Tammy Kwarciak, center, a nurse from Port Huron, Mich., traveled to Canada for the intragastric-balloon procedure, which is not approved for use in the United States.

Recently we have discussed eating disorders and the different reasons why people have them. In the case of obesity, it is difficult for sufferers to drop weight. In Canada, Europe, South America, and other parts of the world, there is a treatment that has drawn Americans to cross into foreign countries. This surgery implants an intragastric balloon filled with liquid into the stomach and left there for up to six months. The treatment is meant for those looking to lose 50 lbs or less who do not qualify for bariatric surgery. This treatment has yet to be accepted by the FDA.
