Waist Size Helps Predict Heart Risk in Teenagers

A new study uses waist measurements and body mass index to help predict health risks in teenagers.

As we have recently debated, the BMI of an individual is not a very accurate portrayal of obesity or malnutrition. A new study that along with BMI, one's waistline can help determine heart risks among teenagers. BMI does not take into consideration lean vs fatty tissue. Instead researchers have proposed a new method using waist circumference percentile - a waist-to-height ratio. Researchers have found that those with a waist-to-height ratio greater than 1/2 were at risk of high blood pressure and other cardiovascular risks.
