Study of Fighters Shows Brain Changes are Seen Before Symptoms

Researchers led by Dr. Charles Bernick are finding the connection between boxing athletes and brain dysfunction. The researchers are analyzing 109 fighters to understand the degeneration of brain tissue due to blows to the head. This research could led to more information on Alzheimer’s disease and other long-term degenerative diseases. This is the first study of its kind; never before has there been a sample this large. By using M.R.I. results, cognitive tests and longitudinal aspects, the researchers hope to draw conclusive evidence for the reason for brain deformation.
