A recent study shows that soccer players may in fact have a higher level of executive function (planning and creative thinking) than those who don't play the sport. Athletes were given a problem solving E-KEFS test and ranked. Incidentally, the players who performed the best competed at the highest level of soccer, with decreasing levels going to less competitive players, and the lowest scores going to non-soccer players. The elevated level allows players to make quicker and better informed decisions and shows in the player's statistics. The athletes with the highest ranking scored the most and set up the most players for goals.
