Studies have shown at least two gene variants increase the risk for common child obesity. Variants near the loci OLFM4 and HOXB5 have been linked to increased BMI in adults. Now, researchers have found that environmental factors are not the only contributions to childhood obesity. Researchers have narrowed down the list of potential risk factors to two loci, one near the OLFM4 gene on chromosome 13 and the other within the HOXB5 gene on chromosome 17. The OLFM4 has raised the odds of early-onset obesity by 22% while the HOXB5 gene raises it by 14%. All that is known of these genes is that they influence the biology of the gut.
