This is a really interesting article about how drugs that we have come to believe make us "smarter" actually don't really have that effect on us for evolutionary reasons. We only capable of allocating just enough cognitive resources (brain power) to get a current job done. If we can't balance all the things we learn then we run into problems. For example, someone who with too much memory may forget simple things as a result of having too much to keep track of. The drugs that are used today simple enhance one's ability to focus, specifically in people who have ADHD. If a "normal" person uses these drugs it can end up having negative effects because if they get up from their studying to get a cup of water, they may start focusing on something totally different and end up wasting more time.
