This article explains "target prevalence," where the brain is more likely to recognize something in situations where it expects something to occur. For example, the brain doesn't spend time looking for lions in Minneapolis, but if you were on a safari your brain might be very invested in looking for lions. Basically, scientists studied how the brain searches for things, and found that if the brain doesn't expect to find something then people will often miss what it is they're looking for by a large margin.
