Smear tests designed to reduce deaths caused by cervical cancer could be improved by adding a further test looking for signs of a virus which causes it. The doctors who checked Dutch women for HPV found more cancers at earlier stages. In the UK many young women are vaccinated for it, but this leaves many adult women that can still contract it. This is a stepping stone in the right direction, the scientists say.
