Stronger Corn? Take off Steroids, Make it all Female

This article talks about the modification of corn by a scientist at Purdue University.  Burkhard Schulz was attempting to shorten the corn stalk, making it sturdier, which would have genetic and economic benefits.  To do so, he took the corn off a plant steroid that is usually added in genetically modified corn.  In doing so he successfully dwarfed the corn, but also found that the plant no longer created the male portion, the tassels.  This could be very economically beneficial to farmers because the tassel is usually taken off before harvesting seeds.  Also it would result in the production of more corn, as kernels, the female portion, were produced instead of the male portion of the plant.
