Mitral valve failure is the most common type of heart valve disease and affects about one out of five people starting at age 55. Recently, however, the interventional cardiology team at the Montreal Heart Institute (MHI) conducted the first clinical procedure in Canada using the MitraClip system, designed to treat mitral valve failure. The MHI has performed the most procedures in Canda with the system, which is an innovative and minimally invasive alternative to heart surgery. Doctors comment that the system allows patients to regain autonomy and quality of life, and therefore will reduce the number of hospital admissions and visits to the emergency room due to symptom recurrence.
