The gene alteration responsible for anophthalmia, a condition in which a baby is born with no eyes, has been identified. They have found that alterations in both copies of a child's STRA6 gene are what cause anophthalmia, which is responsible for 11% of all eye impairments in children. Although a cure has not been found, the identification of this gene leads to hope that there may be something in the works soon.
