Gene Associated with Herpes-Related Cold Sores

Scientists have identified a gene that makes some people more susceptible to cold sores from the herpes virus.  Researchers believe that three factors contribute to the reactivation of the herpes virus: the presence of the virus, environmental factors, and genetics. Scientists have identified a region of 6 genes on the 21st chromosome as the location of the herpes-related cold sores genetic susceptibility gene.
