Bone Marrow can be Bought Unlike Organs


The list of "organs and parts thereof" in the  1984 National Organ Transplant Act included bone marrow. However, bone marrow has now been defined as blood parts not organ parts, which means that it can be bought by patients needing a bone marrow transplant. A federal court has ruled that compensation can now be accepted for marrow. The addition of compensation could attract thousands of new donors.
