In a recent study, scientists used high tech medical imaging techniques to access internal structures of human skulls. These researchers used 3D methods to quantify the shape of the brain. In the past, it was recognized that through the evolution of humanity the brain size increased. Between two different species, Neanderthals and modern day humans, there are independently evolved brains that are approximately the same size however they have a different shape. This discovery is what lead to the research to figure out what the underlying reason for the brain organization was. It was found that the olfactory bulbs and larger temporal lobes were found in the modern day humans, which can correlate to higher thinking.
