Helen McCosker, a PhD student at the Queensland University of Technology has developed a new test that can potentially predict the likelihood of spread or return of breast cancer. Over the past few years there has been many advances in treating breast cancer, but there has been no way of predicting its progress or if it will come back. The test will help identify which patients need their cancer removed but require no further treatment from those who need the tumor removed and additional treatment. This means that patients shouldn't receive unnecessary treatments or be under-treated. The new test uses a tissue surrounding the cancer, which are already collected for biopsy purposes but are not examined.
