It has been found, in a new study, that growth hormone replacement for six months increases bone formation in abdominally obese women. The study constitutes the first time that the effects of growth hormone on bone have been studied in obesity. Researchers from the study stress that growth hormone is vitally important for healthy bones, and demonstrated that women with increased belly fat have both weaker bones and reduced growth hormone levels. Women in the study that had osteopenia and osteoporosis received growth hormone and six months later displayed increased bone formation, increased bone marrow fat and muscle mass, and increased levels of Vitamin D. In addition, they exhibited greater losses in abdominal fat compared to the placebo group. Those that lost more abdominal fat demonstrated greater increases in bone formation.
