Fear of Snakes
Research suggests that having a fear of
snakes may be mostly genetic. This is supported by the consistency of the
amounts of people who fear snakes across all types of people. It could be that
evolution favored those who feared these dangerous animals. This is countered
by the fact that the seemingly natural fears humans have is often not
correlated with the most dangerous animals. Another hypothesis is that animals
fear other animals that moved quickly or in a very different way than
themselves (e.g. snakes, spiders, mice).
