Fear of Snakes

Research suggests that having a fear of snakes may be mostly genetic. This is supported by the consistency of the amounts of people who fear snakes across all types of people. It could be that evolution favored those who feared these dangerous animals. This is countered by the fact that the seemingly natural fears humans have is often not correlated with the most dangerous animals. Another hypothesis is that animals fear other animals that moved quickly or in a very different way than themselves (e.g. snakes, spiders, mice).
