Public bathrooms house thousands of kinds of bacteria

This article starts with talking about the origins of the common toilet (in case anyone was really interested in that particular subject) and goes on to discuss just how many germs can be found on and around the toilet itself.  The study consisted of Gilberto Flores,  and others at the University of Colorado, Boulder that studied 12 bathrooms at the University. They found thousands of kinds of bacteria, mostly grouped into three categories of bacteria from the human gut, human skin, or shoes. They found common causes for all of the bacteria, but the sheer number of bacteria is what made their findings impressive. There were more bacteria in the bathrooms than there are species of birds in North America!
