A new vginal gel developed to help prevent infection of women with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) was being trialed in Africa. Unfortunately, as new research was brought to light, the gel has been determined to be ineffective in preventing infection, and the trial was cancelled. As the study is still underway, researchers are unable the "unblind" the study to determine the causes of the gel's failure.
