People associate being tan with having a healthy glow. Tan skin is actually a sign of skin damage. Cells affected by ultraviolet radiation produce more of the pigment melanin resulting in a tan. UVB rays have a relatively short wavelength and cause more rapid tanning and burning because they affect the surface layers of the skin. UVA rays penetrate deeper and do not cause burning until exposure is very high, and this causes more damage and risk. Tanning beds most commonly emit UVB rays.
