Researchers have discovered that polar bodies, which are small structures that have been pinched off from the genetic material in egg cells, offer a pretty good reflection of the egg cell's genetic activity. They discovered that over 90 percent of the genes found in the polar bodies were also found in the eggs. This would allow for parents and doctors to identify which eggs would be the best embryos without harming the egg in the process.
The polar body is the smaller circle. It is pinched off from the cell.
