HPV Vaccine : The Science Behind the Controversy

As we had a debate about Vaccination, I'd like to share an article about the hottest subject in vaccination field thesedays :)

HPV Vaccine : The Science Behind the Controversy

HPV is a vaccine that prevents human papillomavirus which causes cervical cancer. Recently candidate Michele Bachmann made 12 year old girls get HPV vaccination for mandatory, and this has become a hot topic thesedays.

The Case For Fighting Cervical Cancer
About 12,000 women get cervical cancer in a year, and 4,000 of them are killed of it. However, the vaccination costs $400 and requires three shots. The reality is that, 10% of 15 year-old girls in the US are infected by HPV as well as 20% of 17 year-old girls are.

A Lobbying Effort From Manufacturers
Doctor Diane Harper said that the vaccine is way oversold today. She said, "95 percent of women who are infected with HPV never, ever get cervical cancer. It seemed very odd to be mandating something for which 95 percent of infections never amount to anything." Also, she opposed vaccinating young girls because it only lasts about 5years of the effect after vaccination.

A Dangerous Vaccine?
Parents hesitate to give their daughters vaccination because they worry if that could be dangerous. Two children have died of a rare neurological disorder after getting the vaccine ; which are ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease. Also there's a record of 35 deaths among 35 million young people who got vaccinations.
