US Heightens Regulation on Chimp Testing
The National Institutes of Health have decided to limit testing on chimpanzees to only tests that will benefit human health, and only allow these tests if there is no other alternative. Prior research that concluded that most chimp testing was unnecessary is likely to be a factor in this decision. This kind of testing is already on the decline, due to its costly nature. Still, investigations did reveal several uses of chimp testing that were necessary. This is the first form of "uniform criteria" as a guideline for animal testing.
