New research provides evidence that ravens use deictic gestures in order to get to know a potential partner and to strengthen existing bonds. Scientists believe that deictic gestures such as pointing and holding up objects are based on complex intelligence abilities and are the starting point for communication. Ravens have superior intellect in regards in most other avian species and this study shows that these specialized gestures have evolved in species with strong collaborative abilities, furthering our understanding of non-human communcation.
