On the subject of Brain Damage in Sports

Last night (December 8th), Colt McCoy, the starting quarterback of the Cleveland Browns, was knocked out following a sack by the Pittsburgh Steelers' James Harrison. The medical staff briefly checked him out before allowing him to return to the game just three plays later. Today, there is a significant amount of controversy, as medical professionals and trainers everywhere express their discontent with the decision. Repeated brain damage in sports have been linked to CET (which we discussed in class), which can exhibit symptoms of dementia and other very negative symptoms. Should players have the ability to tell coaches when they are ok to re-enter the game, or should we not trust them with that decision?
