New findings show that salmon which are hatchery-born undergo natural selection within just one generation to select genes best for thriving in a hatchery. However, these traits are directly opposite those required for salmons to thrive and reproduce in the wild. Some worry what the impact will be if hatchery fish interbreed with wild salmon, passing on these undesirable genetics. Scientists expect to see genetic changes such as these over multiple generations, but to occur within one generation is remarkable.
