The Genetics of Bedbugs

bedbugRidding homes and businesses of bedbugs has become a multimillion dollar industry in many cities of the US and around the world. Researchers are using genetics of bedbug lineages to try to understand their ability to spread and infest so quickly. This research condones that bedbugs have a great genetic variation, meaning they have come from many different places of the world. In specific apartment buildings, there is strong evidence of inbreeding as well. There is evidence that bedbugs plagued Egyptians more than 3,500 years ago. These bugs are able to rapidly become immune to pesticides, which makes them a huge problem. Research is continuing to find a solution to this problem.
