Gender Specific Alcohol Treatment Programs

The gap is closing between the amount of men and women who are dependent on alcohol, however the effects on each gender are very different. Alcohol reduces serotonin neurotransmission, although in women the rate at which this happens is much faster than in men. Women are also more likely to suffer from mental health conditions, as there are strong links between low serotonin levels and depression. Scientists and recovery professionals are taking steps to see if a gender based recovery approach would be more effective, based on the different consequences in males and females.
