Researchers Urge Caution When Buying Noisy Toys
Researchers at UC Irvine measured the precise noise level for the 10 loudest toys in stores. All of these toys exceeded 90 decibels and many exceeded 100 decibels. This noise level is equivalent to the sound of a chain saw, subway train or power mower. Children have are very sensitive to loud/high-pitched noise and hearing loss damage is permanent. The American Academy of Otolaryngology reports that unprotected exposure to sounds above 85 decibels for a prolonged period can lead to hearing impairment.
