Is the care ever not worth the money?

This article addresses the times when medical care is worth it, even if it results in death of the patient. The author, Peter B. Bach M.D. discusses his story about a time when he saved a man who was suffering from mesenteric vascular ischemia. He reports that one tenth of the money spent on direct care goes to people who die each year. Some people believe that this much money should not be spent on patients who are terminally ill. Others believe that it is inhumane to not treat suffering patients. So should we spend money based on the statistics? This article covers the debate in depth.
