Canada’s six-year-old ban on commercial trade in human sperm and eggs is all but unworkable without major change, suggests a report commissioned by the federal agency that is supposed to enforce the criminal prohibition. The report used evidence from previous studies to develop a mathematical model of demand and supply for sperm. It concluded that there was a need for more than 5,500 donor sperm inseminations, including 3,029 for same-sex couples, 1,287 for single women and 1,201 for heterosexual couples.
