Researchers at a North Carolina State University have discovered a sex pheromone used by female cockroaches to attract potential mates. The discovery could yield several benefits, such as aiding efforts to save an endangered species of woodpecker. The red-cockaded woodpecker feeds upon these cockroaches. A synthetic version of the sex pheromone has been created, and scientists are considering using it to determine if certain habitats may be suitable for these birds, as well as if certain locations could become better woodpecker habitats through distribution of the pheromone. These discoveries could also be used to help control home infestations of the insects.
