Cholesterol-Lowering Drugs May Reduce Mortality for Influenza Patients

Drugs called statins that are traditionally used for lowering cholesterol may reduce mortality among patients who are hospitalized with influenza. One study found that patients who were given statin medication prior to or during hospitalization for influenza were less likely to die. Patients who did not receive these drugs were about twice as likely to die.
