Breast Cancer Risks that Women Can Control

A new report on breast cancer clarifies what environmental factors women should avoid and which factors they do not have to worry about.   The report sorts different environmental factors into four categories: Yes (there is evidence that this thing increases the chances of breast cancer), No (there is no evidence that it does), Probable, and Possible. Things that can cause a higher risk of breast cancer include hormone therapy combining estrogen and progestin, excess weight after menopause, alcohol, and radiation from too many medical tests.  Oral contraceptives also slightly raise breast cancer rates.  There is no evidence that hair dyes and radiation from cellphones, microwaves, and electronic gadgets cause breast cancer as have been rumored. It is probable that smoking increases the risk of breast cancer but there is no precise evidence of that yet.  It is possible that secondhand smoke, night shifts, and BPA and other plastics can cause breast cancer.
