Some new research suggests that alcohol abuse causes neurological damage more quickly in women than in men. Other studies on alcohol dependence and gender differences have shown that women get drunk faster because they have a deficit of alcohol dehydrogenase, the enzyme which breaks down alcohol in the stomach. More findings state that women more quickly develop depression from alcohol dependence due alcohol decreasing the transmission of serotonin more severely in women. Some believe these studies will prompt researchers to consider if its time to have treatment programs gender-specific.
