The Possible Cause of the Childhood Asthma Epidemic

Beginning in the 1980's, there was a sharp worldwide increase in childhood asthma. A new idea has emerged that links the usage of Acetaminophen to asthma. Acetaminophen began to be prescribed when Aspirin was linked to Reye's syndrome in children. In over 20 studies, including over 200,000 children, the results have been in favor of this theory. Acetaminophen reduces the body's levels of glutathione, an enzyme that helps repair oxidative damage. This association has been consistent across age, geography and culture.
