The pen is mightier than the stomach: Woman who swallowed pen 25 years ago has it removed... and it still works!
A 78 year old woman went to he hospital experiencing weight loss and diarrhea. As the doctor was questioning her about possible causes, she remembered the 25 years previously she had accidentally swallowed a pen while she was using it to poke at her tonsils. Apparently, she fell forward, which probably caused the pen to slide past the epiglottis right into the esophagus, where involuntary muscles would have taken over, pushing the pen down into her stomach through a process called peristalsis. The pen was removed and was found to still work, even after 25 years of stomach acids!
