New research has found that the behavior of locusts to swarm is controlled by a protein which is associated with learning and memory. However, here the protein does not directly dictate learning but instead is used to signal swarming behavior in locusts. The whole process in locusts triggers a feedback loop ensuring that they continue to swarm at various times of the year. Scientists believe that this biochemical mechanism is similar to the way in which humans respond to social change.
