Bioluminescence is the common ability of deep sea creatures to produce light. 90% of creatures that live in the open ocean use bioluminescence to attract mates and defend themselves from predators. A world renowned marine biologist, Edith Widder, has found a way to use this natural ability to fight pollution in the Indian River Lagoon in Florida. The light given off correlates to the amount of toxic chemicals in the sediment. She has also developed sensors that can beam real-time data like current and flow direction. This helps to discover the source of the pollution.
