DHEA hormone may ease menopause, boost women's sex life

A small study at the University of Pisa in Italy has found that the drug DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) can ease menopause symptoms as well as improve women's sex life.   The study included 48 postmenopausal women who were divided into four different groups.  In one, 12 took vitamin D and calcium to prevent osteoporosis; in another, 12 took a low dose of DHEA; the third had 12 take standard hormone replacement therapy (HRT) of estrogen plus progesterone; and finally, 12 took tibolone, a synthetic steroid.  In the end, those taking DHEA saw improvement, while those taking just calcium or vitamin D did not.
