Babies born with no eyes: Scientists identify genetic cause

Biologists have now classified another case of anophthalmia. this means that a baby has been born without any eyes. This could range from there being holes in place of the eyes, to just having the eye tissue being underdeveloped. It can be caused if both copies of the STRA6 gene have been damaged. This means that this condition can now be tested for. There are about 30 cases of this in 100,000 people, but there is no cure for this disease. Prosthetic eyes are placed to help the skull mature correctly. Hopefully, they hope to solidfy the diagnosis methods for this disease so that any couple can have thier baby checked for this disorder.
