Artificial intelligence: Better or worse for human race?
To put it in a sentence, artificial intelligence means intelligent behavior in machines. Throughout history we have made enormous advancements in this field and the future in this field seems endless. Would it be possible to create machines that replicate the intelligence of humans and function just like humans? Singularity is an interesting advancement that refers to the hypothetical future emergence of “smarter-than-human entities that rapidly accelerate technological processes beyond the capability of humans beings to participate”. With the exponential growth of computer processing power, physics, biotechnology and other areas, it is predicted that “the singularity” could arrive as early as 2050. What is the benefit of such superintelligence existence? Well according to Robin Hanson (“Economics of the Singularity”), in the current era, beginning with the Industrial revolution, the world’s economic output doubles every 15 years. Supposing that the superhuman intelligence has similar revolutionary effects, it is expected that the economy would double at least quarterly and possibly on a weekly basis. This is just one example. The possibilities are endless with such machines and it could have very big impacts in the biological field as well. For example, such superintelligence may exceed human abilities in treating diseases. It even might be possible to “cure” death. The downside of such superintelligence is the possibility of a possible “I-Robot” scenario. Such advancements could put human existence in risk.It truly is fascinating and scary how much technology has advanced.
