Well Rested Brains Learn Better

While the title may state the obvious, in this article the scientist explains that sleep works to achieve what she calls, "synaptic homeostasis". We should be familiar with both terms, but what that means is that rest is used to return our synapses (used and formed in learning) to a less excited state. Sleep essentially "prunes" our synapses and neural connections, better preparing us for learning. Super neat article, and giving more significance to the importance of sleep.
