Newer strains of an antibiotic resistant bacterium known as Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) have been traced to animals living on factory farms. Since many of these facilities involve close confinement, viruses and diseases are easily transmitted between animals. To help keep the animals healthy, farmers are giving them lots antibiotics. This overuse of antibiotics is leading to the development of resistant MRSA strains in the animal meat being sold at the market.
